New LA School Atop Tainted Fill
California - The developer for the LA Unified School District has allegedly violated the district's environmental specifications by using hundreds of cubic yards of fill from a stockpile contaminated with carcinogenic PCBs and high levels of harmful petroleum byproducts, according to public and confidential records obtained by The Los Angeles Times. School district officials are now hurrying to test the potential toxicity of the fill used under the administration building at the 19-acre site, a month before the campus is supposed to open as the city's first new comprehensive high school in three decades, the Times reported.
Schools Scramble to House Full-Day Kindergarteners
Arizona – The state is expecting more full-day kindergarten students to enroll this year but many districts fear they simply do not have the space to house them. At Walter Douglas Elementary School in the Flowing Wells Unified School District crews have resorted to converting the library into two classrooms for next year and two other schools in the district are currently seeking temporary space solutions.
Wyoming School Building Costs Above Nation
Wyoming - Officials with the Wyoming School Facilities Commission are worried about the elevated cost of school construction in the state.
According to KGWN-TV, a commission report claims some bids for school construction in Wyoming are coming in at more than $200 per square foot while the average cost of a new school nationwide is $124 per square foot. A shortage of contractors and construction workers in the state - as well as limited incoming bids - are being blamed for the additional costs, the news station reported.
District Takes New Stab at Bond After Faulty Count
New York - Voters are being asked again to approve a school bond after a faulty machine failed to register 704 votes during a districtwide referendum on the bond in December. According to The Journal News, of the votes counted, 739 were for the plan and 920 were opposed. The new bond issue, scheduled to take place June 15, is asking voters to approve borrowing $13.7 million for a new wing at Quaker Ridge School, three new classrooms, an expanded library and fire safety equipment. The bond is about $1 million less than the first go-round, which also included funding for a new gymnasium.
Parents Want Ailing School Replaced
Florida – Parents say six more years is too long to wait to tear down and replace 35-year-old Palm Beach County Taylor/Kirklane Elementary school. According to the Palm Beach Sun-Sentinel, complaints about the campus include allegations of standing water between portable classrooms, collapsing ceiling tiles and flooding, repeated roof leaks, mold in closets and classrooms, and insufficient classroom space and parking for parents during dismissal. According to the Sun-Sentinel, the school is first on a 2003 Palm Beach County School District survey of 13 schools that should be replaced because of age and deteriorating conditions but it is not included in the district's $1 billion construction program for the next five years and the project is not being funded by the half-cent sales tax that county voters approved in November.
Schools Could Get Solar Panels on Roofs
Rhode Island - The Providence City Council is considering a new resolution that would require the city to draw 20 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2010. According to the Providence Journal, if approved, the city could see some significant changes such as solar panels on school roofs and city workers driving electric hybrid cars.
